Palmyrah Festival – 2025: Celebrating the Pride of the Palmyrah

In a vibrant celebration of heritage and health, the Palmyrah Festival – 2025 was organized by the Northern Province Tourism Bureau under the theme “Let the World Know the Glory of the Palmyrah Tree.” The event aimed to raise awareness among local communities and tourists about the health benefits, medicinal value and the capacity to replace plastic by and eco-friendly quality of Palmyrah-based products and foods.

The festival was held on Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Jaffna Open Grounds, drawing a diverse crowd from across the island and abroad.

The inaugural ceremony on the first day was graced by Mr. L. Ilangovan, former Chief Secretary of the Northern Province. Later that evening, the cultural segment of the festival was officially opened by Mrs.Thanuja Murugesan, Chief Secretary of Northern Province, and Mr.M.Piratheepan, District Secretary - Jaffna.

A key highlight of the festival was the exhibition and sale of Palmyrah-based products and traditional food items, showcased in 18 vibrant stalls. From handcrafted goods to health-focused delicacies, the festival provided a platform for local entrepreneurs and producers to connect with a wider audience. Department of Indigenous Medicine, Palmyrah Development Board and Palmyrah Research Institute also displayed their products and provided advices to visitors.

Each evening featured a captivating street theatre performance titled "Manangalil Oru Maram" by the Oorelu Semmugam Aatrugai troupe, drawing enthusiastic applause from attendees.

The Palmyrah Festival – 2025 successfully brought together National & international tourists, alongside local residents, in a shared appreciation of the Palmyrah tree’s cultural, economic, and ecological significance.

Impact of the above festival highlighted by an entrepreneur who makes palmyrah leaf products, received an invitation from a community based tourism service provider.
