Northern Province Tourism Development Strategic Plan 2026–2030 Officially Presented

The Northern Province Tourism Bureau has developed the Northern Tourism Development Strategic Plan 2026–2030 with the objective of advancing the tourism sector of the Northern Province to the next level. The strategic plan, prepared by the consultancy of Prof. V. Nanthagoban, was officially handed over to the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, on Friday, 6 February 2026, during a meeting held at the Northern Province Governor’s Secretariat.

Based on extensive studies, field assessments, consultations, and stakeholder meetings conducted across all five districts of the Northern Province, the plan has identified a total of 431 tourism sites/ assets.

The strategic document also incorporates a comprehensive SWOT analysis and gap analysis, providing a clear assessment of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges facing the tourism sector, together with recommendations for future development.

The event was attended by the Deputy Chief Secretary (Planning), the Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government of the Northern Province, the District Secretary of Mannar, the Assistant Chief Secretary from the Chief Secretary’s Secretariat, the Director of the Urban Development Authority – Northern Province, representatives from the other four District Secretariats, the Chairman, Director, and members of the Northern Province Tourism Bureau, academics from the University of Vavuniya who prepared the plan, and several other distinguished participants.

  The finalized strategic plan will be uploaded to the Tourism Bureau website and made accessible in due course.
