'Sivarathiri' festival

Maha Shivaratri translates as ‘the Great Night of Shivan’ and the annual festival is held as part of the Hindu calendar. Lord Shivan is the focus of the festival, who is part of the Hindu trinity which also includes Brahman, who created the universe and Vishnu, who preserved it.

It is a major festival in Hinduism, and this festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. It is observed by remembering Shivan and chanting prayers, fasting, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as self-restraint, honesty, non-injury to others, forgiveness, and the discovery of Shivan. The ardent devotees keep awake all night on the Sivarathiri day.
