Provincial Seminar to mark World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day is held annually on 27th September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international and local community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.

Provincial Seminar to mark World Tourism Day 2017 was held at the Conference Hall of Jaffna Public Library on 25th September 2015. This seminar was organised by the Chief Minister’s Ministry of Northern Province. Hon. Minister of Education, Cultural Affairs, Sports and Youth Affairs Dr.K.Sarveswaran graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The seminar commenced at 2.00pm with the lighting of Oil lamp. Welcome address was delivered by the Secretary to the Chief Minister’s Ministry Mrs.Rubini Varathalingam. Hon. Minister for Women Affairs Mrs.Ananthy Sasitharan and Regional Coordinator of UNDP Mr.Thanakumar participated as Special Guests. Hon. Opposition Leader of Northern Provincial Council Mr.S.Thavarasa, Additional District Secretary – Jaffna Mrs.S.Theivendram, several Divisional Secretaries of Jaffna district, Secretaries of Local Authorities in Northern Province,  several officials from various Ministries and Departments, students from University of Jaffna, University College of Jaffna and Advanced Technological Institute – Jaffna, and Hoteliers also participated in the seminar.

‘Bharathanatiyam’ dance and ‘Thappu’ Traditional music performed during the Seminar. Northern Tourism strategic plan prepared by Mr.S.Kalaichelvam and a dedicated website for Northern Tourism developed by Ceymplon company were launched by the Chief Guest. Certificates were issued to Provincial Tour Guides who successfully completed a training programme on Tour Guiding which was organised by the Chief Minister’s Ministry of Northern Province. Finally the seminar concluded at 6.00pm with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr.S.Sivapala – Director Planning.
