World Tourism Day is held annually on 27th September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international and local community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.
Chief Minister’s Ministry of Northern Province organised an awareness walk to mark World Tourism Day 2017. This walk in procession commenced infront of Jaffna Railway station and ended at Pannai beach park area. Hon. Chief Minister of Northern Provincial Council Justice C.V.Wigneswaran inaugurated the procession at 9.30am on 25th September 2017. Secretary to the Chief Minister’s Ministry Mrs.Rubini Varathalingam, Divisional Secretary of Jaffna town Mr.P.Thayananthan, several officials from various Ministries and Departments, students from University of Jaffna, University College of Jaffna and Advanced Technological Institute – Jaffna, Hoteliers and general public also took part in this walk procession.
Traditional musical troop ‘Iniyam’, “Nathaswaram’ and ‘Thavil’, ‘Thappu’, ‘Parai’, ‘Udukkai’, cultural events such as ‘Kavadi’, ‘Karaham’, ‘Mayiladdam’, ‘Oyiladdam’, ‘Silambam’, etc. performed during the procession. Many kinds of bullock carts and vintage vehicles also took part in the procession.
