It is declared as a sanctuary by the Department of Wild Life Conservation in 2008. Very rare migrant birds, the Spot – billed duck, the Comb Duck and the Gadwall, the rare migrant Long – toed Stint and the uncommon migrant the Peregrine Falcon, the Common – ringed Plover, Timmins’s Stint and the Red – necked Phalarope , Eastern Black – tiled Godwit have been spotted here. It is located in Mannar town alone the Nanattan road with the sea on its west. This sanctuary comprises of wetland, Pulaintivu island, Thiruketheswaram, Pallimunai, Vankalai and the strip of land on either side of the causeway connecting the island of Mannar to the mainland. It consists of arid-zone thorn scrubland and pastures, waterholes and tanks, sand dunes, mangroves, salt marshes, lagoons and sea-grass beds and maritime grass lands. It is in the Nanaddan DS Division.
