It is one of the five prehistoric God Shiva temples in Sri Lanka located at Manthottamam in Mannar district about twelve kilometers East of Mannar town. According to the legend, Kethu Bhagavan worshipped God Shiva in this temple, therefore the temple is called Thiruketheeswaram temple. History of this temple dates back to well beyond 2000 years. Portuguese destroyed (1570) this temple and was rebuilt during Dutch period. The temple is situated abutting the Palavi tank. On the Mahasivarathiri day the devotees undertake “patha yathra” to this temple from all parts of Sri Lanka. The religious hymns of “Nayanmar” that belongs to 8th and 9th centuries have mentioned about this temple. Manthottam was a place where foreign vessels visited. It is located close to the Manthottam port. Travel from Mannar town to Thalladi junction - Vankalai junction - Manthai junction and then to Thirukketheeswaram temple.
