The 'Thiruvasaga Aranmanai' (Castle of Thiruvasagam) is situated in Navatkuli, Jaffna along A9 road near to Navatkuli Railway station. The visitors and worshippers of the Castle of Thiruvasagam first worship Lord Ganesh and bathe Sage Agasthiyar and then worship Manickavasagar who stands besides an immense Shivalingam on a rock Chariot of 21 feet height surrounded by cooling water. The immense Palipeedam and Nantheeswarar attract one to worship them first and then the Dakshinamurthy in His appropriate form with the features such as abayakastham etc. and seated under the Kurumthai tree with the expression of giving His Grace and Initiation. Along and behind the Moorthy there are 108 Shivalingas adorned in pattu veshti and ruthratcha garland. The pious devotees worship the Moorthy to get education, protection, redemption from the evil and to be blessed with good health, wealth, great knowledge and Gnana. Many pray to get the good benefits of Viyaala bagavan by worshiping Dakshinamurthy. Therefore, there are special poojas on every Thursdays.
Thiruvasagam is a volume of Tamil hymns composed by the ninth century Shaivite bhakti poet Manikkavasagar. It contains 51 compositions and constitutes the eighth volume of the 'Tirumuraigal'. Manikkavasagar's Thiruvasagam and Thirukovayar are compiled as the eighth Thirumurai and is full of visionary experience, divine love and urgent striving for truth.
Manickavasagar was born in Thiruvathavur. He sang many hymns in praise of Lord Shiva. Among them Thiruvasagam and Thirukovayar are very popular. Vathavurer (Manickavasagar named after his birth place) won the title of Thennavan Paramarayar with his excellent knowledge. He was appointed as the Minister of the Pandya King Varagunavarman II from 862CE -885CE.
