The Sri Nagabhooshani Amman temple which has a noteworthy traditional background and history is situated in Nainativu which is centrally positioned among the seven islets off the Jaffna mainland.
The annual high festival lasts for fifteen days and terminates with the “Theertham” ceremony which held on the full moon day in the Hindu month of ‘Aani’. Tens of thousands of devotees arrive at this temple on the first day of the annual high festivals (flag hoisting ceremony), Sapparam,Ther (car) festival and Theertham festival.
Other notable features are the Ther (car) festival day when goddess Nagabhoosanai is taken on the Ther which has exquisitve carvings depicting mythological stories on it. Likewise Lord Vinayaga and Lord Muruga too are taken around in highly decorated “Thers.”
Several halls which are used as pilgramis’ rests are found here. In the interest of worshippers who go there from far away places the temple authorities have arranged for the free supply of rice meals to them in the noon.
