There were many Christians living in Thoddaveli in the 16th century. All these Christians were Catholics said to be converted by the Portuguese. The history shows that nearly 600 Catholics were beheaded by the Hindu king Sankili at Thoddaveli. The Hindu king who could not tolerate the conversion of these people into Catholicism beheaded them. Then in remembrance of these Martyrs a church had been built in a small scale and then rebuilt as it is today. Some of the bones of these Martyrs also were found at Thoddaveli and buried in a sacred tomb beside the Church.
